Women and plastics

A quarter of all women in Western industrialized countries use up to 15 different cosmetic products every day. It is not uncommon for these to contain up to 100 chemicals, some of which are harmful to health.

The effects of plastic toxins are different for men and women, according to the "Plastic Atlas 2019″ published by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz (BUND).

According to the report, women's bodies have more body fat and therefore accumulate more fat-solublechemicals in the tissues. Plastic softener is also considered highly hazardous to health according to the Federal Environmental Agency. According to the Plastic Atlas report, women's bodies are particularly sensitive to toxins at life stages such as puberty, pregnancy, lactation or menopause. This can also have consequences for the unborn child.

Another source of pollutants could be cosmetics. A quarter of women in Western industrialized countries use up to 15 different cosmetic products every day. It is not uncommon for these to contain up to 100 chemicals, some of which are harmful to health. In addition, many cosmetics contain microplastics. This not only harms our health, but also the environment. Hygiene products can also be problematic. The plastic content of tampons is up to six percent, while sanitary pads are 90 percent crude oil-based plastic.
