How are dental plaque and Covid-19 related?

The mouth is the gateway for many bacteria and viruses to which we humans are constantly exposed. A clean and healthy mouth is generally a good barrier against bacteria and viruses. Investigations in Wuhan have shown that the oral cavity is the most important gateway for coronavirus.

Although the routes of transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen, which triggers COVID-19 disease, have not yet been conclusively elucidated, it is certain that droplets are an important route of transmission. SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in the throat, nasal mucosa, and also in saliva. (© Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, University of Bonn, BZÖG, DAJ (eds.). As of 1.9.2020).

The mouth is the gateway for many bacteria and viruses to which we humans are constantly exposed. A clean and healthy mouth is generally a good barrier against bacteria and viruses. During investigations in Wuhan, it was found that the oral cavity is the most important gateway for coronavirus. It is therefore understandable that a high presence of plaque in the oral cavity with inflammation, especially on the gums (gingivitis, periodontitis) is associated with an increased risk of various diseases. The connections between periodontitis and an increased risk of diabetes or cardiovascular disease, for example, are now known and have been studied. Through open wounds in the inflamed areas of the gums, germs can enter the blood system more easily and quickly, from where they enter the entire body.

Thus, it can be assumed that in the context of the Covid 19 pandemic, maintaining oral health plays a particularly important role.

Of course, not only during a pandemic is it recommended to brush your teeth with toothpaste and toothbrush at least twice a day.

The prevailing opinion among leading dentists is that brushing teeth at least twice a day with toothpaste helps protect against viral infections (including Covid-19).
