"Mask mouth" another side effect of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wearing a mask protects us and others in this pandemic time. Yet, our dentists report the latest side effect-a new oral hygiene problem that brings dental diseases such as tooth decay, gum inflammation, and bad breath.

In our dental clinics, more and more patients are presenting with a new set of disorders, which have already been defined as "mask mouth": inflammation and/or cavities in people who have never had them.

These disorders, if left untreated, can become detrimental to the mouth and overall health. Gum disease, in extreme cases, can even lead to stroke and an increased risk of heart attack.

Wearing the mask increases the dryness of the mouth, which consequently increases the accumulation of bad bacteria.

People with masks tend to breathe through their mouths instead of through their noses, this causes a decrease in saliva but that is what fights bacteria and cleans teeth!

At this time, when a face mask is an indispensable and essential accessory for everyone, our advice is to breathe through your nose, drink as much water as possible to ward off bacteria, and brush your teeth at least twice a day.
